"air and light and time and space", Charles Bukowski

"–you know, I’ve either had a family, a job,
something has always been in the
way
but now
I’ve sold my house, I’ve found this
place, a large studio, you should see the space and
the light.
for the first time in my life I’m going to have
a place and the time to
create."

no baby, if you’re going to create
you’re going to create whether you work
16 hours a day in a coal mine
or
you’re going to create in a small room with 3 children
while you’re on
welfare,
you’re going to create with part of your mind and your body blown
away,
you’re going to create blind
crippled
demented,
you’re going to create with a cat crawling up your
back while
the whole city trembles in earthquake, bombardment,
flood and fire.

baby, air and light and time and space
have nothing to do with it
and don’t create anything
except maybe a longer life to find
new excuses
for.

Sotatsu

Ilustración del Ise Monogatari
Woman writing on water, por Tawaraya Sotatsu (año 1600)
"To love
unloved
is more futile
than to write
on a flowing stream".

Yosano Akiko

Even at nineteen,
I had come to realize
that violets fade,
spring waters soon run dry,
this life too is transient

Swifter than hail
Lighter than a feather,
A vague sorrow
Crossed my mind.

You have yet to touch
This soft flesh,
This throbbing blood --
Are you not lonely,
Expounder of the Way?

Spring is short
what is there that has eternal life
I said and
made his hands seek out
my powerful breasts

Hair unbound, in this
Hothouse of lovemaking.
Perfumed with lilies,
I dread the oncoming of
The pale rose of the end of night.

A thousand lines
Of black black hair
All tangled, tangled --
And tangled too
My thoughts of love!

I say his poem,
propped against this frozen wall,
in the late evening,
as bitter autumn rain
continues to fall.

Come at last to this point
I look back on my passion
And realize that I
Have been like a blind man
Who is unafraid of the dark.

It was only
the thin thread of a cloud,
almost transparent,
leading me along the way
like an ancient sacred song.

The clouds pile up darkly,
waves rise up fiercely in a sudden storm;
I am like this floating boat, ill at ease.

To be forgotten is not unusual in these sad times
what is depressing is the lack of consolation.

Someone stops writing and leaves me miserable
leaves in a forest of regret.

Lost in the dark spring night,
color and passion gone,
one´s heart yet steeps in the fragrant bloom.

My wooden door – shall I unlock it, too?
The moonlight makes me dither
as the moorhen insistently taps.

Someone passes,
and while I wonder
if it is he,
The midnight moon
is covered with clouds.

A thousand strands of black hair, tangled hair - like them my thoughts,
tangling and entangled.

Be close, you say;
but the first thing I met
on getting close
were your feelings,
thin as summer clothes.

My life and the year are closing together.
At the sound of the wind, dreary is my heart.

My place in the world:
why should it bring me grief?
Mountain cherry blossom in my sight,
were it ever so...

On all of the world's autumn sadness
rest your thoughts!
Though the moon into your heart
may have found its wandering way.

Without a trace of cloud,
for a thousand years upon the limpid water’s surface
the lodging moonlight brings peace.

This life of ours would not cause you sorrow
if you thought of it as like
the mountain cherry blossoms
which bloom and fade in a day.
